What is a kidney stone?

A kidney stone is a hard deposit of minerals and salts that forms inside the kidneys. It develops when certain substances in the urine, such as calcium, oxalate or uric acid, become concentrated and crystallize. Kidney stones can vary in size and may cause pain if they block the flow of urine.

What are the symptoms of kidney stones?

Common symptoms of kidney stones include severe pain in the back, side, lower abdomen or groin, which may radiate to the genitalia on the side which bears the stone. The pain often comes in waves and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Other symptoms include blood in the urine, pain or difficulty while passing urine and frequent urination. In some cases, kidney stones may not cause any symptoms and are discovered during a routine health check-up or imaging test.

Who is at risk of developing kidney stones?

Anyone can develop kidney stones, but the risk is higher in people who drink less water, have a family history of kidney stones, consume a high-salt or high-protein diet, are overweight or have certain medical conditions such as gout or recurrent urinary tract infections. Staying well-hydrated can help reduce the riskof developing kidney stones.

Can kidney stones be treated without surgery?

Yes. Small kidney stones can often be treated with medications, adequate fluid intake and regular monitoring to help them pass naturally. However, larger stones or those causing severe pain, infection or blockage may require advanced treatments such as RIRS, PCNL, URS or laser kidney stone surgery, depending on the size and location of the stone.
